Medial Knee Pain

Any thoughts on TMS medial knee pain possibly due to a medial meniscus tear? No matter how many times I have recovered from TMS-related pain, including 14 years of increasingly intractable back pain finally ending in 1993, and a posterior meniscus tear in 2019, I still sabotage myself when new pain appears. I immediately go the place of, "OMG, this is it, the BIG ONE, the one that will force me to stop running, cycling, or skiing!"

It would be helpful to hear from members who have overcome meniscus issues after resorting to a TMS approach. I am now about a month into my latest TMS struggle with this worrisome left-knee pain.

Thanks for any suggestions or guidance!

Thanks so much for offering that thread. I can relate to a lot of what you have shared, especially wishing that a new pain site would emerge, or that an old one would become active. That’s when I know that the latest episode is TMS- related.

If only I could keep a logical perspective on all if this, things might go better for me. About two months ago, I finally moved beyond a protracted period of peroneal tendinopathy of my left ankle, ultimately realizing that tendon issues are the most common sites of TMS. A month later, BAM, medial pain of my left knee! (Why always the left side?). The timing alone should have tipped this off as being TMS.

In spite of the increasing pain, I continued my running, cycling, and working out. Then IT happened, the event that should have put this all to rest. It was my long-run day, six miles minimum. Two miles in, my knee hurt so much I thought I’d have to stop and limp home. I decided to keep going to see what would happen. By mile three, the pain was gone, completely! I ended up doing an additional seven miles, ten in all - pain free!

The rest of the day and the day following saw no return of the pain. By day three, the pain was back, with a vengeance. Logically, one would have to understand that whatever was causing my terrible knee pain at mile two could never have suddenly healed itself, allowing me to continue unimpeded. The fact that I remained OK the next day offers additional proof.

If only these powerful insights could penetrate my primitive brain, the brain that continually prevents me from getting in touch with the truly troubling emotions I have about life, perhaps there would come a day when my TMS recovery has greater permanence.

A one terabyte HD would not have enough storage to contain all of the sites that TMS has chosen to sabotage me over the course of my seventy-two years on this good, green earth of ours! Such a shame that I still don’t get it after all this time.

At any rate, thanks again for responding and for sharing the link.

This is natural, it's the way our brain wants to work, scattered thoughts etc. It's one of the reasons TMS therapy involves journaling, and especially in crafting Evidence Lists which I find particularly effective. Black and white and starkly on the page (or screen), a list of why it might be and might not be TMS.

Worth emphasizing. Doing the Structured Educational Program has been recommended to you. There's literally nothing to lose by doing it. It doesn't even require registering. The time you spend obsessing over and tracking these tiny technical details could be spent doing the work!

Jan, thanks for the suggestion. In fact, I have indeed started the Structured Education Program. Perhaps there's hope for me after all!

"Perhaps" is your TMS brain always at work, subtly sowing doubt. I suggest being more mindful of these seemingly-innocuous automatic responses before committing them to the universe.

There is a little book called The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz. These four tenets of Toltec wisdom fit seamlessly with TMS recovery. The first agreement is Be Impeccable With Your Word.

I'll keep that reading in mind. Again, thanks for the suggestions.
