The goal of this page is to keep the definitions simple simple simple. The goal is not to have the most precise definitions, but to allow people to get up to speed rapidly when people use scientific terms in our forum discussions.
- Amygdala
- two almond-shaped portions of the brain responsible for learned emotional reactions, most notably fear. Part of the limbic system.
- fMRI
- a large machine that allows us to see which parts of the brain are active (i.e. "light up") when we do certain activities. Stands for functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
- Limbic system
- a collection of brain structures near the center of the brain that are primarily responsible for emotions and emotional memory. Sometimes known as the paleomammalian brain.
- SPECT
- a large machine that allows us to see what is happening inside of the brain, similar to an fMRI.
