My Story
I have been helping TMS patients since 2010 when I went to NYC and was personally trained by John Sarno, MD.
I am a licensed physician and surgeon and studying with Sarno totally changed my life.
One thing that Sarno emphasizes and that seems generally ignored, is that the patient must see a physician and rule out any organic reasons for their symptoms. I am an expert at this type of diagnosis and would say that at least 40% of my patients do have real physical issues that require treatment. Not all chronic pain is pure TMS. It is important to make this distinction.
Most practitioners in TMS are not physicians. They cannot do this exam. Sarno was opposed to this but people do what they do and only refer to him when it is convenient. He refused to attend most of the TMS meetings and had little regard for the " TMS" world that we have now.
I made a video on this topic.
Since training with John Sarno, MD, I have new found respect for his work. Over many years, my back would go into spasm when I got upset. For some reason, I never connected the dots and realized that it was all TMS.
Finally, in Fall, 2023, the spasming made it impossible for me to drive my car, go to work, have a life. I went to so many doctors who treated me for physical things but none of it helped.
One day I asked myself, If I were my patient, what would I do?
Of course, it was all TMS.
It took a little while but today I am 100% pain free.
But my pesky little brain wasn't done with me.
Then I began to have crippling lightheadedness and vertigo, everyday. Just bending over to tie my shoes I felt I was falling over. When I lay down to sleep the room would spin. It was horrible.
All TMS.
All of that is now totally gone. However, at the time, I didn't know how I could go on.
Next to Dr Sarno, Howard Schubiner, MD, is my TMS hero. He is absolutely the most talented, knowledgable person in the field today.
I got trained personally by him and am now certified as one of his proteges. Whenever I have a question with a patient, he always helps me figure out what to do.
I began practicing osteopathic medicine in 1991 full-time. For many years, I assumed that all physical pain, at which I became famous for alleviating, was due to physical causes. That is what every doctor including me was taught.
Well, we were and are wrong here.
There are only two choices on the menu for the cause of these symptoms. Either they are caused by physical reasons and need physical treatment or they are being generated by your brain.
A tiny segment has both and I love treating them because I can figure out how to totally help them feel better, too.
Every single doctor I know has many patients who get better and then they come back and say, Well, it was better a while but now it again hurts. Or they will often have other symptoms that they never before had.
They spend lots of time, money, energy going everywhere for help.
Until they come to a TMS doctor, they will never get well.
The older and more experienced in my work I get, the more excited I am about this way of helping people.
By the way, one of the greatest benefits of this work, as I was taught by Howard Schubiner, MD, when he taught me, is that your anxiety will decrease and often disappear. As someone with a life-long history of anxiety and depression this has been a miracle. - Loading...
