There is a documentary on Netflix now called Take Care of Maya that tells the horrific story of a child who developed chronic pain and was diagnosed with CRPS. For those of us who know about TMS, it is obvious that this child has TMS. However, this fact is never presented to her or her parents. Instead they are abused by the Alternative Health Care Industry, the Traditional Medical Industry, the Child Protection System, and the Legal System in general. It was horrifying to watch and I know that similar scenarios play out daily because of the lack of knowledge about the true origins and treatment for chronic pain. Know before you watch it that it is very disturbing. More information below:

Take Care of Maya is a 2023 Netflix documentary that tells the story of Maya Kowalski and her family's experience with Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida:
    • Maya's diagnosis
In 2015, after a severe asthma attack, 9-year-old Maya begins experiencing breathing problems, headaches, blurred vision, skin lesions, lower limb dystonia, and chronic pain. After visiting several doctors and hospitals without a firm diagnosis, Maya's mother, Beata, a nurse, discovers Dr. Anthony Kirkpatrick, who diagnoses Maya with advanced complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).
    • Maya's separation from her family
The documentary includes interviews with the family and an investigation into how Maya was separated from her family while in the hospital, and her mother's death by suicide before they could be reunited.
    • The lawsuit
The family sues the hospital and the Department of Children and Families for more than $200 million, alleging "medical kidnap" and charges of false imprisonment, battery, and intentionally inflicting emotional distress on Maya and Beata. After a two-month trial, the hospital is found guilty on all counts and awarded the family over $260 million in their civil suit.
