As I think this is an area I struggle with I was looking forward to reading the attached article on exercises to generate self compassion but the link no longer works.
Any advice on how I go about generating real true self compassion?

Hi. I don't remember what was in that link but you might want to get into the skin of your own self, when you were a child. So you, now, as an adult, can talk to you - as a child - and take care of her. You use a soothing voice, compassion, care and love. And comfort that child.

Just an idea...Maybe others here on the forum might have other ideas.

    Take care.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. My difficulty with this approach is I have very little memory of my childhood, I have a terrible memory full stop, possibly part of my dyslexia, however I don't remember any trauma and my parents are both kind and supportive.
I think as a child I was soothed it's me who's unkind to me, I think . I guess you are saying imagine myself as a child and be kind to her ?
    Again thanks for the support

Dr Kristin Neff is kind of the queen of self-compassion. Scroll down this entire page to see the many different resources she has, some of them free, before you click through on any of them. You can undoubtedly find her books at your local library: https://self-compassion.org/ (Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff)

Other self-compassion/self acceptance gurus are Tara Brach and Brene Brown.

This is an often-recommended practice for emotional opening, yes.

There are some really great self-compassion meditations you can try. I have one I keep coming back to that focuses on visualizing your little self. It always brings our all of the emotions. I prefer the shorter ones because I can't sit still for more than 10 minutes.
