Help me to understand if my issue is TMS?

Discussion in 'General Discussion Subforum' started by GreatStoriesToTell, May 27, 2025 at 3:26 PM.

  1. Hi, Please bear with me I am new to it and very much in panic. From last 2 years I am dealing with anxiety after a panic attack and was coping up nicely until last year I had an intercourse with an unknown girl and boom next day I started getting anxiety of getting std. I went to a clinic and they gave me antiretroviral PEP to take for 28 days. I was so much in stress that I started developing symptoms like tongue burning sensation, burning sensation on my body during 28 days dose. Once the course got completed I tested negative after 3 months and doctor told me my results are conclusive and no need to test again but still the sensation were there. Somehow I blamed it on anxiety but it was unbearable.
During this time I got introduced to TMS and I stopped caring about the pain and my symptoms eventually started subsiding. I have not gone through TMS practice in depth as not caring was working for me and last December my pain went away completely. First my burning sensation on body went away and lastly the mouth burning on my tongue.
I was free of pain for 5 months until 3 days back I was thinking about last year and felt like to test again and boom all the symptoms came back mouth burning and body skin burning sensation. It is bearable but I am now in stress again as my focus is completely on the pain like it will go or not and why it came back.
What do you think is it TMS and what should do now?

Hi and welcome to the forum. It sure sounds like this is a good place to be. I'm going to list our resources for beginners, which starts with reading one of Dr Sarno's books if you didn't do that last year. If you did read a book, you might need to read it again or try one of his others. The Mindbody Prescription or The Divided Mind are the ones which address symptoms other than back pain. Go through each item on this list, some of which can be done very quickly, and you can also start doing the program while reading one of the books.

To learn more about TMS we believe that it is essential to first read one of Dr Sarno's books. Here is a short biography and bibliography: https://www.tmswiki.org/ppd/John_E._Sarno,_MD (John E. Sarno, MD) Many public and school libraries carry his books, and they are readily available as used copies as well as audio and e-book formats.

There are two easy and anonymous self-assessment tests that we recommend:
    1) https://ppdassociation.org/ppd-self-questionnaire (Symptomatic – Association for Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms) (Self Quiz — Psychophysiologic Disorders Association) from the PPD Association (the professional group of mindbody/TMS doctors, therapists and other practitioners)

    2) To get a big picture overview of your childhood issues, use the questionnaire that's discussed in this forum post which describes and links to the well-regarded ACEs questionnaire for childhood experiences: https://www.tmswiki.org/forum/threads/aces-quiz-online-printable-versions.27061 (ACEs "quiz" - online & printable versions)

Anxiety is a common TMS symptom, and needs to be addressed directly as part of the recovery process. Resources by Dr. Claire Weekes are very effective in dealing with anxiety. You can find more here: https://www.tmswiki.org/ppd/Overcome_Anxiety_with_Dr._Claire_Weekes (Overcome Anxiety with Dr. Claire Weekes) or read her seminal book "Hope & Help For Your Nerves" which is also readily available in multiple formats.

The TMS Wiki has a free online program which does not require any kind of registration and is accessed via easily managed modules: https://www.tmswiki.org/ppd/Structured_Educational_Program (Structured Educational Program)
