My Brain is trying to trick me!

    My brain on TMS:

A symptom imperative pops up and I haven’t had this one in about 6 months. I honestly thought I healed from it and was done with it.

My brain: "Well, I have started running so this has to be the cause of this pain. I know I have been told I cannot stress this area and I need to be careful with it and modify your postures and sitting positions by doctors and PT’s in the past. I could probably still walk but I need to quit running now."

This is exactly what my brain told me to do!! I started to feel defeated since running has felt so good that I was getting physically stronger and running just made me feel better. I liked being outside after being in an office all day. And then I realized-of course my brain says I have to stop running! I’m branching out and living more of a life and TMS wants to squash that immediately! It wants to make me small again.

I feel like that after I wrote about my plateau and read some of the encouraging comments that I’ve been excited to do TMS work. It really kicked up my motivation. And then I noticed symptoms moving again and even going away this past weekend. I was feeling good! Monday is when my symptom imperative popped up and stopped me in my tracks. Until I realized what it really was. I've continued to run each day after work and the symptom imperative is gone now.

So just a lesson for me (and all of us!) on how easy it is for TMS to take a new or existing symptom and fit it to its narrative to stop you from living life.

Way to go Joule! It’s such a good feeling when we respond well to a new symptom and it’s gone quickly!
