   Hello. I'm interested in the concept of defining chronic pain as a defense mechanism and am looking for research which demonstrates TMS theory. If anyone can point me to any published controlled research or clinical outcome studies it would be very much appreciated.

   Check out Sustained Pain Reduction Through Affective Self-awareness in Fibromyalgia: A Randomized Controlled Trial. It was a RCT by Howard Schubiner showing the effectiveness of TMS in fibromyalgia patients. While the n is not huge, it did lead to Dr. Schubiner receiving a NIH grant for further study.
