Review of Dr. Hanscom’s DOC app

I just finished Dr. David Hanscom’s Direct your Own Care (DOC) app for MindBody recovery. It takes about 3 months. The app is easy to use, with simple daily lessons. There are no writing assignments—but you are encouraged to do what he calls “expressive writing,” daily. There are also some art projects.

The principle he uses is a neural pathway model. You build new neural pathways to replace the pain pathways. He emphasizes awareness, calming your life, removing stress, forgiveness and play.

Two books recommended in the app really had a great impact on me:
Overall, I liked the experience. It was light and hopeful. He has some fun games included and great short readings. The journaling is not focused on anger; you just write what you feel about anything. It really helped me to build a daily journaling habit because it didn’t feel like too much pressure.

While I was doing this app, I did have a big breakthrough. My cramped hands released. I don’t know if it’s attributable to this app, alone—but I’m sure it had some impact.

Ultimately, I’m beginning to think —for me—that the Sarno concepts work best. The neuroplasticity methods feel like icing on the cake. I think, in the end, both will help me. And I do believe that you can do both. That’s just my opinion.

The app costs $25/month or $60/year. You can learn more here: https://thedocjourney.com/
