    Guilty!

One of my symptoms has worsened, (LPR silent reflux) even after following a low acid diet for six weeks, and honoring the SEP work.

This led me to a string of threads provided by Cactusflower where I found others who had healed from Gerd and LPR. BUT! Despite the mostly encouraging stories, one contained a link referencing the work of Dr. Jaime Koufman re acid reflux. Since it was her low acid diet I follow, I thought the link might also be helpful. It was not. In fact it described the worst case scenarios that could happen to those suffering from LPR! This included a lifetime of taking medicine (PPI’s). BTW, the first time I followed this diet, my symptoms went away. This time, it’s not working as well. Hmmm.

I was really getting comfortable with the idea of my symptoms being TMS when I read Dr. Koufman’s disheartening article and have experienced a setback. I wish I had not gone searching! I wonder now if I ever believed mine was TMS to be so easily swayed? I must admit that I am angry at myself for doing this.

    Your thoughts are welcomed!

    Hi Mtnjac,
you probably know that I am here because of my GI/stomach issues. I have a stomach burning lot of burping and trapped air which causes pain and sometimes nausea. When i burp it is mainly air but sometimes also stomach acid so I think I would be diagnosed with gerd/reflux as well if i would seek a diagnosis today. Nevertheless, several months ago when I did the initial diagnostics, I was "only" diagnosed with functional dyspepsia. Here are my thoughts.
TMS is still not widely accepted by traditional medicine. It is therefore not surprising that you will read a lot of "worst case scenarios" from traditional doctors as they treat TMS with traditional medicine which cannot work for TMS a part from the placebo effect. That should not worry or surprise us too much. The important thing is that there are enough examples of people healed from gerd/reflux using the TMS approach. I have collected a set of GI specific success stories for me which I find quite helpful to reread from time to time. i recommend this to you as well. Also, remember that David Clarke, now president of the ATNS and one of the big names in TMS, is a gastroenterologist and convinced that most of the GI issues are TMS. By the way, what I noticed is that with GI issues there is seldom a immediate book care but it typically takes longer to get better over time. Last but not least, dont you think that the fact that the diet helped you once but not anymore plus the fact that your symptoms worsened when starting the SEP work is a clear indicator that the problem is not physically but TMS?

    Mtn,
If you haven’t read The Divided Mind by Dr. Sarno, you might want to take a peek at it. That was his last book and he went extensively into non-back pain TMS symptoms. He and other TMS experts recognize that the TMS brain has absolute control of our entire bodies. It can make any mechanism in your body, any system, not function as it’s supposed to. If it can scare you— if it’s a good place for it, it will do it. It can control acid, brain chemistry, blood pressure, thyroid function… the list goes on and on. Don’t doubt that it’s TMS! It’s TMS.

Cardinal rule—(you already know you broke it): don’t research conditions; don’t Google conditions. Dan Buglio-(do you know of him?) he cautions strictly all of his followers to not join forums on particular conditions— this will exaggerate all your fears to the point of making your TMS worse. He’s a great one to follow if you have never heard of him. His focus is on eliminating fear. He healed from 13 years of back pain, and now has a program called PainFreeYou. He recently wrote an excellent book by the same name. And he puts out a great pep talk video every single day, about seven minutes long, on YouTube. https://youtube.com/@painfreeyou?si=JDVTrlbVi81OGx2S

Don’t worry, you can get rid of this! It’s only a phantom ghost in the closet! Shine the light in there!

Brilliant response, @berlinale! Just look at how far you've come! dancea

And BTW, I agree about GI issues in general being tough symptoms to overcome, I think because
    1. The gut-brain connection is really strong, and
    2. There are SO MANY sneaky ways that GI symptoms can sneak up and attack!

And I know whereof I speak

What a wonderful response Diana has given you. Lots of good stuff.

TMS 100% affects the GI. I experience it from time to time. The chest acid reflux burning, stomach gurgles, (even though nothing in my diet has changed) but there’s always something else going on… which needs to be examined.
