What’s the most disheartening thing a Dr. ever told me?

The first time I went to a doctor for TMS, it was for tingling on the bottom of my foot and all sorts of strange sensations in my back and they told me they didn’t know what it was. This was before the Internet, and way before I found out about Dr. Sarno. So I just felt like I was crazy and my life was hopeless because something was wrong and I didn’t know what it was. That was 30 years ago. I basically worried about it all the time, but then eventually, I ignored it and it subsided enough to live with.

Another time, about 11 years ago, a doctor told me I had asthma. (I’d had a cough for months.) That’s a pretty serious diagnosis. She gave me three medications, which I felt super sick from taking. So, I threw them away. My asthma symptoms eventually faded— mostly because I got out of my stressful job. (I’ve never had asthma before, and I’ve never had it since so, I know that was the wrong diagnosis.)

Most recently, my doctor told me that I was deconditioned, which means you’ve lost all your muscle tone and fitness—-over a couple weeks’ time of being in bed with Covid. She sent me to a physical therapist, who scared me to death and made me think something’s really wrong with me. So, I quit her. But it was quite a while before I could get what she said out of my head.

Long story short, I don’t really trust doctors and I don’t really trust our medical system— so I don’t often go ask them what’s happening. I pretty much know it’s TMS in my heart, but it’s still very scary to overcome the doubt, especially if they give you any notion that something is really wrong with you.

When I was really afraid sometimes I liked to take this quiz offered by Dan Buglio, and compiled by doctors. If you score really high it’s extremely likely you have TMS. I scored high. I kind of relied on that for a while, whenever I had doubts. But the longer you work on your TMS, it proves it to you that you have TMS. It shows it’s hand and then you know.
