Bob Evans, PhD
Dr. Bob Evans has been treating TMS patients for over 24 years, during which time he has seen over 1,000 patients. He is currently at a private practice in Englewood, New Jersey, and is a licensed psychologist. From 1986-1987, Dr. Evans trained under Dr. John Sarno, Dr. Eric Sherman, and Dr. Arlene Feinblatt at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. He has continued to work with Dr. Sarno since his training and wrote briefly about his case studies regarding TMS on pages 169-178 in The Divided Mind, by John Sarno.
Dr. Evans incorporates a variety of treatment techniques and approaches in treating his patients, including Eastern approaches like creative visualization, yoga, mindfulness, shamanism, and taoism; and Western methods such as humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, gestalt, and energetic psychotherapies. Somatic Experiencing and mindfulness techniques are also incorporated into his treatments. He has said his approach helps "clients learn to regulate their own nervous systems through the basic modes of experience, ie., Sensation, Imagery, Behavior, Affect (emotion) and Meaning (SIBAM).
Practicing the skills conducive with maintaining an awareness of and a presence in the body plays a significant role in allowing TMS symptoms to subside." He also attempts to individualize his TMS treatment to each individual client, and help them "learn to sense and trust the healing wisdom within." Evans realized that the personality traits (such as perfectionist and goodist) that create chronic symptoms can also be disruptive to a person's treatment. In addition to this Evans stated "For many people, TMS paradoxically puts them on a journey of self discovery. By traveling this path people can get past their TMS(PPD) pain symptoms and reclaim the powerful, creative wisdom of the MindBodySpirit, which the stresses, traumas, and hurts of life have impacted upon.
Dr. Evans also sees value in watching movies because they "often speak directly to, inspire and reinforce positive changes in the unconscious." Bob Evans has contributed valuable information to the wiki including a review of the book Waking the Tiger, by Peter Levine, and an article on Somatic Experiencing.
