Organizing a TMS Support Group
Interacting with peers can have a tremendously positive impact on one's ability to overcome TMS. Our TMS forum is a great way to give and receive support. Another option is to organize and attend an in-person TMS support group. The PTPN has organized several support groups in the past in both the United Kingdom, and in Boston, MA. The following are several suggestions and tips for people who are interested in organizing their own TMS support group. If you are please contact a member of the PTPN. Getting the Word Out
One of of the most important parts of starting a support group is raising awareness about it, and informing people when the group will meet. There are a few tips that people have used in the past to various degrees of success.
- Contact practitioners in your area and ask them to tell their patients about the group. Check out the Find a TMS Doctor or Therapist page for contact information.
- Reach out to other TMS peers who are from your area. Teaming up is a great way to spread out the workload.
- Announce the group in the forum. We have visitors from all across the world, so there is a good chance that someone in your area will see and read your post.
Planning the Event
Once you have announced the event, and have people interested the next step is to begin to plan everything out. This is not as challenging as it may sound, and if you need any assistance feel free to let us know, and we will help you out.
- Find a public place to meet: Coffee shops and restaurants are great ideas. Make sure you announce where you are meeting in the forum announcement.
- Discuss with the group how often you want to meet. The Boston TMS group meets on the fourth Thursday of the month. Having a regular scheduled time like this makes organizing each meeting easier.
