What is your association to the TMS community? I have been a member of the TMSForum since 2004
How did you first become interested in TMS?
I read Dr. Sarno's book, Healing Back Pain in 1999 after exploring chiropractic, physical therapies, back exercises, doctors and getting no lasting relief. I had seen a 20/20 story with John Stossel on Dr. Sarno but at that time did not accept TMS. It was only after running out of options with my pain that I read the book. I think this is true of most people who eventually come to understand TMS.
Have you ever suffered from TMS? Yes, I had debilitating back pain and spasms over the span of 15 years. I had several TMS equivalents as well.
What insurance plans do you currently accept? none
Do you have a sliding scale of payment for people who are not covered by insurance? yes
Have you published any materials related to TMS? yes, article in Natural Awakenings, Boston edition Nov 2015, Psychology Tomorrow Sept 2015
Which mind-body medicine books do you find yourself recommending most frequently to patients? In particular, do you feel comfortable referring people to Dr. Sarno's books?
I recommend Healing Back Pain because I find it the easiest to understand for someone just opening up to the mindbody connection. I also recommend The Divided Mind.
What have you done to educate yourself about TMS, and what plans do you have for further education about TMS?
I read the TMSForums frequently. I have also become interested in mindbody energy healing, a direct result of learning about TMS. I have taken a series of courses over the last few years in an energy healing modality that can quicken the course of TMS therapy by clearing trauma, especially childhood trauma. This methodology helps to access the unconscious mind and the body using muscle testing (applied kinesiology). In addition, I plan to keep up to date with any additional information in the TMS field.
Are you able to conduct therapy sessions over the phone? yes, by phone and also using Skype
As we are going to post your answers on the TMS Wiki, feel free to write some text to introduce yourself
My name is Michele Lowenthal and I have experienced the incredible ability of Dr. Sarno's writing to heal my own back pain. I felt free for the first time in years to engage in life again without the diagnoses that had been given to me from doctors and chiropractors. The knowledge that our minds and bodies are connected was a very powerful discovery for me.I went back to school to get my masters in counseling in order to learn how to help others who are open to accepting the TMS diagnosis but still not pain free.
