Parasympathetic Nervous system

My rheumatologist said that my parasympathetic nervous system is fried. He said that I would eventually die of organ failure, etc... from being in a chronic state of flight or fight mode. He stated that even with drugs or diet, I will most likely never be the same mentally or physically.

Being this fight or flight mode is tms do you think I can heal my nervous system? Or will I never be the same?

You can heal your nervous system.

Almost a decade ago my partner was so wretchedly ill from undiagnosed Parkinsons the consultant gave him 3-5 years to live. While not fully recovered he is still here, still cheeky and embracing life fully.

He is not the same physically, mentally or emotionally but in many ways he is better. His spirit soars and all the emotional dross is long gone. Illness changes us. That is unavoidable but we do have choice in the nature of that change.

Screw your rheumatologist. People defy the odds and prove doctors wrong everyday. Be one of them.

    Sending love xxx

What an absolute *beep* for instilling fear in you. I'm sorry you've had to go through this. I'd certainly look at changing Dr's if that's possible... you want someone to work with you, not against you. Okay, That's my rant over.

Now to reassure you...you CAN and WILL recover from your autoimmune and there's countless success stories available on the internet.

Shannon Harvey recovered from the autoimmune lupus... Barbara Allan from severe arthritis (she was in a wheelchair for 7 years). There are also quite a few other successes on YouTube and by scouring Google. So it definitely can be done.

Being under constant chronic stress, (whether it be from financial, relationship or even healing worry) can cause the release of unhealthy amounts of cortisol which is responsible for inflammation. So the key seems to be to "calm" the mind and gut for healing to occur.

It seems that those who have overcome autoimmune diseases have used a dual approach to healing. Incorporating mind body technique and changes to diet.

I recently watched Barbara's Youtube video and she stated arthritis is caused by repressed anger which is inline with Dr Sarnos work.

I'm currently incorporating much of Dr Sarnos work with that of, Barbara's to find a happy medium in healing. I think it's okay incorporate different techniques, as one size doesn't fit all.

Wishing you all the best in your journey, you've got this.

    God bless,

    Mike

Mncjl123, what you posted seems outrageous. I can't imagine a doctor speaking to you this way. I'm really sorry this happened to you. I'm with Mike, get a new doctor... Were you ever diagnosed with an illness, or just a 'fried system'?

I think there is always hope. Take good care of yourself.

Diagnosed Sjogrens Syndrome/Lupus. I have since fired the doctor. He literally sat me down and drew a big diagram (so visual I can see to this day) about how I would die if I didn't follow his exact instructions with medications. He showed me what organs would first shut down, and some other horrid things. Because of chronic pain and anxiety and fear (now what I know as tms) I was nearing a nervous breakdown a year ago today after hearing those words. I was in my closet with a gun knowing my life was going to end up short. I don't know how I got back on track, but after 8 months of following the Micronutrient Miracle plan - my brain is better. And, just 2 months ago finding Sarno books and wiki forum, I feel like I may have hope to actually be pain free, happy and a productive member of society. I have been in a motorized scooter for 6 years, and I will prevail.

My grandmother had lupus and died at the age of 87 from old age and this was a long time ago when the chance of surviving was lower. You will prevail. I am glad you are feeling better.

This brings to mind a tale I once heard of an old chap who had an auto-immune illness and who regardless of this was living life very nicely thank you very much.

One day he attended the Doctors with his son for one of his regular check ups only to find his usual doctor had moved to a different surgery so he had to see a new locum. The new doctor was taken aback as as to how well the old chap was doing in spite of his auto immune issues and started to question him intently as to the nature of his symptoms etc. The doctor asked him if he was suffering from night sweats and pain to which the old chap replied that he hadn't...the doctor casually remarked, "oh, I'm sure you will before too long, everybody gets that'. I'm sure you can guess where this is going and before too long the chap found himself getting the aforesaid symptoms the doctor told him he would. It was reported by the son that under the 'care' of the new doctor his father's health went downhill swiftly as more and more 'usual' symptoms developed and that basically his father gave in to the condition and died soon after.

Everybody knows and understands the power of placebo but the role of nocebo is just as if not more powerful. I think all medical professionals should fully understand that the way they converse with and relate to patients is critical and it is very easy for memes and suggestions to be picked up and these can have devastating consequences...I know this happened to me thanks to a zealot of an osteopath. As Plum mentioned people prove doctors wrong all the time and this generally happens when they refuse to buy into the accepted wisdom and understand that healing is a personal thing and isn't done by the words of doctors alone.

You may have seen this video...it is an oldie but it perfectly encapsulates what change can take place when we refuse to accept the opinion of 'professionals' at face value.

I think you need a new Rheumatologist! The nervous system can be healed IMO, it just takes time, a positive attitude and healthy diet. Again, just my 2 cts.

I would say you're rheumatologist's response bordered on cruelty and is in essence BS. I have an autoimmune disease which has improved markedly over the course of treating other TMS symptoms. Don't forget that doctors are trained incorrectly to disregard completely the role of emotions in illness. I find specialists are worse then GPs in this regard. You CAN recover. Your nervous system WILL recover. I don't know if you're following a structured education program like the one on this wiki or the one in Howard Schubiner book but I found them extremely helpful. I have had remarkable improvement in only 6 weeks.

It might be helpful to redraw your rheumatologists diagram but show it having your nervous system improve. Give your brain something to replace that old horrible image with. Look at it every day until it sinks in.
