Plantar fasciitis

Has anyone used the TMS theories and practices successfully for plantar fasciitis? I have had a really bad case for like 7 years now.

I agree in principle that TMS applies....however I do I have really flat, narrow feet and even when I've been quite happy in life I've still needed some type of light orthotic. If you go by Dr Sarno's book, any need for an orthotic is 'incorrect'?

    Yes Ybird,
I was quite successful. I had many docs offering surgery and tried everything, then got Sarno.

After how many failed, custom orthodics and finding Dr. Sarno's work, I decided to use an off the shelf "superfeet" orthodic in my shoes. I figure "throw the dog a bone" and don't give my feet something to fixate on like "no support."

I went from being afraid to even step out onto a hardwood floor with bare feet to pogoing all night long. So little to do with support really. But my advice is you don't have to be purist.

Over time, my suggestion is keep questioning and removing the barriers to using this TMS approach!

    Good luck!

    Andy

Totally worked for me. I have had real PF in the past but if it's lasting past 3 months and you have orthotics plus shoes that are meant to counter pronation, then I'm thinking TMS. As per usual for me, my brain took it to an extreme with ankle swelling and unable to ride a bike or do much at all. I finally got the concept that my feet were fine. Usually takes a week or two after I'm convinced for symptoms to die down.

    Thanks for the replies.

Andy: Dr. Sarno is insistent in the book that one should drop all physical approaches, but maybe this is for educational purposes? I definitely believe (know) it's a mind body problem.

Part of the problem is that it's really hard to get any support for .. not only healing that way, but even existing in a mind body way.

Whereas I have someone now offering to pay for custom orthotics, which I think worked for me way back when. Hopefully if I do get them I can sort of incorporate them into my general healing.

If you go through our resources here, and read success stories there is great support. And I know that out in the "community" there is very little support for mindbody approach, you're right.

Stopping the physical supports/thinking is a process for most people. I used my orthodics only as a slight "support." Not as the thing which would fix my foot or foot pain. I did use the Rx orthodics for much of my mindbody work, simply because they were already in my shoes. So I don't think you need to get rid of everything. I know it is complex. Try to turn your mind to the psychological rather than the physical over time.

    Good luck.

I'm with Andy, @Ybird. It's down to personality types. Some people prefer, even need, an all-or-nothing, black and white solution with clear guidance. I've never been that person. I have always seen the world in shades of grey, and I resent strict rules.

The way I see recovery is that it's a unique process for each individual. The one true thing is that recovery can ultimately only come from within, not from outside, whether we're talking about practitioners, medications, or equipment. These things are temporary tools which help our brains to visualize recovery. Use them as temporary tools, never as solutions. That is all.

Ybird, there are a few folks who don't escew the idea that sometimes we have to get a little "help" to get to our mind/body goals. My TMS coach uses TMS principals but is not against using physical strategies to get the job done. It caused me a lot of anxiety and became another distraction to worry about "breaking the TMS rules". When I just said screw all that, I need what I need to succeed and I need them "for now" everything changed in my mind. Nothing has to be forever, you can experiment and see what works best...just drop the fear surrounding the outcome.
