One of my favorite TMS coaches is Tanner Murtagh - he is a coach and a psychotherapist who himself has recovered from a myriad of symptoms which manifested both physically and mentally. He is really candid about his struggles with anxiety, addiction and chronic pain. One of his greatest assets is the way he discusses mindset and thoughts through the lens of Pain Reprocessing. Much of what he talks about isn't delved very deeply in Alan Gordon's book The Way Out, it's more in line with some of the things Nichole Sach's speaks of in her podcasts.
We've discussed types of Brain Retraining on this forum including things like somatic tracking - and what it is...paying attention to the symptoms LIGHTLY while also paying attention to non symptomatic parts of the body and telling yourself that it is absolutely safe to feel these sensations. It's exactly the same thing as feeling the sensations of emotions and being OK with them, or the "floating" technique Claire Weekes describes in her books for thoughts: just let them float by like clouds in the sky - knowing they are there but not putting any value or judgement upon them.
Tanner describes the mindset needed to do these exercises in the video below. He gives a great idea of what "lightness" and intensity is, how you must be consistent with these practices over time and how repetitive conscious thoughts can become unconscious over time - and we often sense this as frustration at being stuck in compulsive thoughts about our symptoms. Tanner has a variety of guided practices on his youtube channel including these quiet, seated practices as well as very short, soft Qui Gong and others.
