What follows is a letter that was sent to HilaryN's family doctor so that she could inform her about TMS in the hope that she would consider it as a possibility for some of her patients with similar unexplained pain.

Dear Dr ,

I think I mentioned to you last time I saw you that I have now completely recovered from my RSI, which I'd had for 13 years.

I'd like to tell you about the cure I found, because I think this could help other patients who are suffering from chronic pain for which there is no apparent structural cause or cure.

I read a book by Dr John Sarno, MD – he's a back specialist and is Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. He treats patients with chronic back pain at the New York University Medical Center. He tells his patients that their pain is due to repressed emotions and he offers them a treatment programme to help them get better, with a 90+% success rate.

The treatment programme is described in his book and consists of telling them how the mind creates physical pain. By understanding how this works, many patients get better. Others require psychotherapy, but also make a full recovery.

I'm sure I'm not telling you anything new by saying that physical conditions can be caused by psychological issues and I also know that many patients wouldn't be happy to be told that (I wouldn't have been!), because there is an implication that their condition “isn't real”.

But this book (title is below) and method offers a cure for those people. Perhaps if you told them that one of your patients had got better by this method, I would be more than happy for them to email me to talk about it if they were interested.

Although many people get better just by reading the book, others need more support and it would be really good if you could offer patients a programme to give them that support.

Having been a patient at your practice for many years, I have a huge amount of respect for you and the other doctors at the practice, and I would love to know your thoughts on this subject.

Here are my contact details: (email address and tel no). Or I'd be happy to come along to the surgery to talk about it.

Yours sincerely,

“The Mindbody Prescription” by Dr John E. Sarno, MD

“They can't find anything wrong!” by Dr David D. Clarke, MD (this book is easier for a lay person such as myself to read.)
