How did you first become interested in TMS?
I used to help my own health problems.
Have you ever suffered from TMS?
Yes. I have used Dr. Sarno's approach to successfully eliminate my own long standing back pain and chronic insomnia.

Read either Mindbody Prescription or the Divided Mind by Dr. Sarno. We will then speak by phone to find out if I think I can help you.

Which mind-body medicine books do you find yourself recommending most frequently to patients? In particular, do you feel comfortable referring people to Dr. Sarno's books?
I only refer people to Dr. Sarno's books at present.

I spent time with Dr. Sarno seeing patients at his office in New York City.
Other than training with a TMS doctor, what have you done to educate yourself about TMS, and what plans do you have for further education about TMS?
I will be attending the LA Mindbody Conference on TMS (2010)
I have been studying the psychological component of medicine and psychosomatic medicine for many years on my own.
How would you characterize your position on referring for spinal surgery?
I have never referred anyone in 18 years for such surgery but I am not opposed per se to it. Everything has its place in medicine and surgery. However, I rarely encounter patients who require such surgery for recovery. Even before I learned of Dr. Sarno's work I knew that few spinal surgeries were indicated and that many resulted in even more problems than the patient had before surgery. How did I know? They were the ones who came to me for help.

Prior to training as a physician, I received an MA in Psychology and Comparative Religion at the University of Chicago. I also spent a year training at the Forest Hospital, Des Plaines, Ill. in psychotherapy.
I did my post-graduate medical training at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Washington, DC. in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
For many years I observed the mindbody connection in my patients. However, it wasn't until I read Dr Sarno's books that I began to specifically diagnose and treat TMS in my patients.
The results have been very gratifying.
What could be more exciting for a physician than to help people take back their lives?
