Hi, a simple question. Should one also calm down their nervous system if one feel sad or depressed? It's depression also a form of anxiety/being in flight or fight mode? Thank you.

I dont think depression and sadness are that much alike. Sadness is a normal human emotion, depression is not. I think calming your tits will be a good idea anyway. Sadness can be observed and welcomed; it doesnt have to be a negative emotion. Emotions arent really negative at all. Emotions are just emotions. Emotions are meant to be felt; theyre there to protect you. I'll leave the rest for others.

Thanks. It makes me feel very anxious. And since I don't like the feeling, I force myself to go out. To move. To try having fun, etc. but today, I did the opposite, I sit down, and calm myself down watching a movie. It worked. Both the irritability, and the feeling if havyness, went away, just like that. So the trick is not to fight it, but to spoil ourselves, to slow down. Maybe depression is in fact demanding too much of yourself.

I encourage people to pick up Dr. Claire Weekes’ book Hope and Help for Your Nerves as it does a nice job of explaining depression and how to gently move through it.

Depression occurs when a nervous system is exhausted and sensitized.

Her guidance is to: face, accept, float, and let time pass. Same method that is applied to all TMS equivalents.

I'm not sure whether depression is related to fight/flight. There would have to exist some sort of activation of the limbic system when you're feeling depressed, I guess.

About sadness, if you let it be released without trying to control it, it will itself bring some sort of calmness.

Thanks for your input guys. I heard people talking about journalling. I never tried it, although I gave written a book, when my wife got breast cancer. In simple words, how do you use journaling to fight OCDing on negatives thoughts? Should you just write the emotions? Or sentences? should destroy those written pages? Isn't that a little depressant? I hear Dr hanscom defending it at all costs. My thoughts are the sole culprit of my depression
