I remember one time going to see my general practitioner because I was having a significant back pain flare up. This was about ten years ago, when I still thought western doctors might know how to treat back pain effectively. I described my symptoms, struggling to get up/ sit down, searing pain when I pivot my hips this way or that, the acute, sharp, pressure points where the muscles clinches into a knot. The pain all over was quite severe. It was a flare up, when the issue goes beyond a generalized aching, to an acute set of muscle spasms that trigger sharp, searing pain.
Well, the doctor was not too impressed. Initially he seemed to be listening, but then generally became dismissive. He told me to try taking a hot shower, ibuprofen, etc. Although he saw me able to function, he couldn't see the intensity or degree of the pain I was actually in. Maybe I didn't convey how bad it was. As the brief appointment wrapped up, he seem irritated, and said "You know, I have people who come in here in wheelchairs, who can barely move, who actually have real back problems." The assumption being that I was overreacting, wasn't really suffering, and I should walk it off.
That pissed me off. Never saw him again.
